We had an enjoyable camping experience, although the site we had was an open area in which we were tightly aligned with other rv's. It took Donald three attempts to get the rv into the site without hitting other trailers. The sites include electric and water hookup and a separate dump site. The park itself has a natural woodsy setting. There are bicycle trails, clean facilities, and a history museum dedicated to the US Civil Corps of Engineers. During our visit, the main bicycle trail was closed due to the damage sustained from Hurricane Irma. There is no pool, but two nice sized playground areas for children.

Pets are allowed on leash, with no limits on breed. My husband decided to combine riding the bicycle while holding our the leash of our dog, Lucy. Lucy is 80 lbs. and medium sized. As we rode our bicycles past a dumpster, a raccoon popped out and jumped into a tree. A startled Lucy took chase with Donald holding her leash while sitting on his bicycle. It was a fiasco in slow motion. Lucy pulled Donald cross-ways off the bicycle and dragged him across the ground into the side of the dumpster. From an outsider's point of view, it was nothing short of hilarious. Poor Donald was sore, scratched, and hurting. However, he did not learn his lesson and rode back by the same dumpster later with Lucy in tow. The raccoon popped its head out again, but lucky Lucy did not see it that time.

Highlands Hammock was enjoyable overall due to the woodsy tranquility. However, there is close proximity between sites so hopefully you will have a great camping neighbor.
