June 2018 - Fort Desoto is challenging to get reservations. We lucked out and booked a site in the dog-friendly area of the campground. Since we live just south of Fort Desoto, my husband towed our open-fisherman boat with his truck, and I drove the Thor. I was my first time driving the RV over the Sunshine Skyway bridge. Needless to say, it was a white-knuckle ride since the weather was horrid the first day with heavy rains.
The sites are woodsy and private. During the evenings, the no-seeums would show up in force. Definitely take some Off or other deet bug spray, Even if you do not have a boat, there are many outdoor activities. Bicycles and trikes can be rented to cruise the beach side paths. The fort itself gives an opportunity to explore history and to view the Gulf of Mexico from a higher vantage point. The nearby snack bar provides refreshing drinks and lunchtime foods, and the souvenir shop supplies tourist with beach accessories and memorable of the Florida lifestyle.
